Hello from Newfoundland! 😀
Our first stop in Newfoundland is Rocky Harbour, which is based in the middle of Gros Morne National Park. We found a great Airbnb - probably the best we've stayed.
(Who is that in the window?)
Once we arrived after our ferry voyage and 4-hour drive, we checked out the town/village/hamlet of Rocky Harbour. Having only experienced west coast Canadian National Parks, we expected something a lot (A LOT!) bigger and more developed - nope. There are a few restaurants here, one gas station, one grocery store - you get the idea. After chatting with a man from Toronto who has been to many eastern Canadian National Parks, this is pretty much how they are in the east.
Unfortunately, the weather does not look very promising while we are here - pretty much rainy, cloudy, and cool everyday is the forecast. (And to think that we have been missing Oregon.......)
So one Day 1, we decided to try and beat the rain and head to Western Brook Pond (easy, 3 mile round-trip hike/walk), about 20 minutes north of Rocky Harbor to the "quintessential" view in Gros Morne. Maybe it's better when the sky is blue. Oh, and apparently one can take a boat ride (private company) on the lake (which we did not do).
So it was a nice walk - but nothing great.
We then drove to Broom Point which was a small fishing village until the mid-1970's
Then onto Green Point, which we think is still inhabited today:
Then onto the Lobster Cove Lighthouse
It was well past lunch by this point, so it was off to one of the five restaurants in Rocky Harbour - The Treasure Box - which also serves food. Brad got the Fishcake Special - three fishcakes (cod, potatoes, onions) - with a homemade pickle relish, two toutons (fried bread) - served with molasses, and baked beans. It was very good - not healthy by any means - but very good!
