Exploring the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Ontonagon, Michigan

The thing this area is known for is the Lake of the Clouds, so off we went to explore.  Just a few miles down the road from the campground is the overlook – it’s a short, boardwalk (300’) to the overlook. Yeah, nice, but in all honesty, we’ve seen better.  We did plan to do some hiking to the lake, but changed our minds – it was just a hike through the woods to what we were already seeing – for us, there was no interest (plus we were feeling quite lazy). 

We then walked a while along the three-foot beach of Lake Superior – the views were quite nice and Zoey enjoyed her form of fetching sticks in the water – it goes like this: don’t throw too far where she actually has to swim, as she’ll only go to the point where her stomach gets wet - have a second stick at the ready, or she’ll run off and chew the original stick to bits and pieces – once she sees stick #2, toss immediately or she’ll jump up on you for the stick – repeat often. :-)

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Ontonagon, Michigan

 

Wow – remote is the word for this place! We’re here just a couple nights to explore the area – this was yet another place on the list of things to do in the Upper Peninsula that various people recommended.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is the largest state park in Michigan with a campground on Lake Superior, which is nice, yet we chose a more open spot away from the lake.  The campground has some good potential – all sites are 30-amp electric and $25/night. There are free, hot showers which are okay. The one issue with this campground is that the sites, while wide, are the most un-level we have seen in over a decade of RV’ing. There are huge holes one needs to maneuver, which is the main issue.  Not just our site – almost all of the sites have some type of “challenge,” even if you’re in a small RV or a car.

But hey, we got into our site, set-up, the skies cleared (it rains a lot here) and we’re ready to explore! 

Oh,, and remote, right - so remote, in fact, we're two miles past the end of the Earth! :-)
