At dawn (yup, that’s damn early) on Day 2 we woke up to the
smell of strong coffee. (Brad loved it; most people added hot water to temper
the…..shall we say….mud). As we got
ready for the day (get dressed, take down the tent, etc… the guides (oh, they
are Stephen & Nick, as previously mentioned, as well as Travis & Scott)
made up breakfast. Ready for this? Fresh eggs made to order, bacon, hash
browns, freshly cut cantaloupe, blueberry muffin cake and lemon poppy seed
muffin cake.
It
was our coolest day temperature-wise and we spent a few hours simply meandering
down the Colorado, sometimes simply floating and other times going through
(what we would later learn) were small rapids.
One thing we never realized before this trip was that the
Grand Canyon has a ton of waterfalls ~ here’s just one of the many.
Since the raft is large, we were able to move around at will
– we could sit (in about four different areas), stand or kneel. There was
unlimited ice eater and lemonade, as well as snacks that we could access at any
time.
Eventually we arrived at Red Wall Cavern – a huge cave where
many people landed and were hanging out and enjoying themselves.
This is a photo looking out from “inside” the cave.
After stretching our legs (and peeing), we were back on the
raft with a destination of finding a spot for lunch.
Remember I said it was our coolest day weather-wise……..
We lunched (make your own deli sandwiches with fresh
vegetable accoutrements, fresh fruit, chips, &cookies) at a site called
Peter Hansbrough Grave (he was a member of an expedition into the Grand Canyon
in 1889).
Look who’s eating again!
We were then off for more adventures!
We camped at Kwagunt (still a small chance of rain, so we
slept in the tent but risked it by not putting up the fly)
and took a little desert hike (not our favorite kind of
hiking).
When we got back from our hike, Stephen & Scott were
starting to prepare appetizers and dinner. Hmmm….look who’s “helping”
“Helping” = “Trying?”
Dinner on Day 2 was spaghetti with two kinds of sauce (meat
& an awesome vegetarian one), fresh salad, freshly cooked garlic bread and
for dessert – carrot cake!
