Canyon Overlook Hike, Zion National Park, Utah

The Canyon Overlook hike is a one-mile round-trip hike on the east side of the tunnel, offering views of the canyon from the Great Arch (although you cannot see the Great Arch from this hike, since you’re basically atop it). The hike is not for anyone afraid of heights- there are a lot of drop-offs and narrow passageways, although there are fences in most places. This would be considered a moderately-difficult hike, as there is a 163’ elevation change over half a mile, and the terrain is rocky and uneven. It was a fun hike, which only took us 15-minutes to the top, where we enjoyed views of the canyon, as well as the drive to the tunnel.

This would be a definite to-do as well, but be sure if you’re here in the summer, do this hike early in the morning – there was no shade and we can imagine how hot the trail will be mid-day. Parking for the hike is immediately after exiting the tunnel on the eats side, but if this is full, there was some overflow parking a bit further down on the left side of the road. There is a restroom in the parking lot, but no potable water, so be sure you bring some with you. Finally, the hike is short enough to combine with another hike, such as Emerald Pool Loop or Weeping Rock.
