Another
tourist attraction in the New Iberia region is the
Konriko Rice Mill ~ the oldest working rice mill in America. We weren’t sure if we wanted to go, but
figured, hey, we’ve never been to a rice mill. At a cost of $4 per person (we saved
20% with the bright yellow Hot Discounts flyer from the Vermillion Parish
Visitor’s Center), we thought, well, it’s not that expensive if we don’t like it.
So….the
slide show we saw first was quite dated – just knowing it was a “slide show” tells
you how dated it was; 1970’s is our bets guess.
For the record, it is 2012…….
The
tour was educational and somewhat interesting ~ we learned how rice is
processed: first the hulls are removed in a two-stage process – what remains is
brown rice, the more nutritional of the two rices (white being the other kind)
as it contains the bran shell. To continue onto white rice, the brown rice is “polished”
to the point where the rice bran is removed, thus losing nutritional value, but
still quite good to eat.
The
tour ended with a visit to their company store, where, of course, a visitor
could buy an assortment of rice products, as well as other items.

Been there, but it was late in the day and we didn't get the slide show -- or to buy a 50# bag of rice. WEetook a picture of the front of the place, but there was fire plug at the curb and the grass had brown spots. So I magically removed the fire plug and greened up the grass using Adobe Photoshop Elements. Fun.
